The Irish Golden Girls

Ireland from the air

Today all around the world the Irish celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Even those who are not Irish will wear green, raise the colors of the Irish flag, and toast to Ireland. Today, I celebrate my Irish roots and think of my homeland. I left beautiful Éire (Ireland) seventeen years ago and settled in America. There are millions of Irish emigrants spread across the world just like me. I am lucky to know three other Irish girls who also moved from Ireland to America. We are all from a small town back in County Cork.  There is Catherine, Debra, Eileen, and myself… otherwise known as the Irish Golden Girls.

Debra and I went to school together and little did we know as we sat in Mr. Barry’s art class that one day we would be looking at a real life picture of the New York skyline.  Eileen and Catherine were neighbors whose paths set them on the road to the U.S. over a decade apart.  We are spread across the East Coast from Boston to sunny Florida but are connected by our Irish roots. Our conversations by phone, text, and on Facebook bring much laughter and keep our memories of Ireland alive.   We are bonded by our Irish American experiences and can relate to each other’s joys and tears.  Yes, there are tears of sadness we share for our families back in the Emerald Isle who we all miss dearly.  However, the joy and laughter that we experience in our online group chats overshadow these sad thoughts and we always leave the conversation with smiles.  Put simply we just understand each other!

There are people you meet in life who bring out the best in you and those are the ones you should keep in your life. Treasure those people, support and encourage them in their endeavors. I cherish my friendship with my Irish Golden Girls and like the theme song from the show I just want to say to them, “Thank you for being a friend!”

And to all the readers of my blog an Irish wish for you:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!
